  • Mom’s Recipe Box

    Mom’s Recipe Box

When Shirley Lundeby passed away in January 2022 at age 92 she left behind many good memories, but some of the favorites where the many meals she prepared over the years. Not willing to let her recipes slip away her son Bruce and grandson Austin collaborated to scan her recipe box and post it online. Here you will find the collection of recipes our mom gathered over the years. Most in her own handwriting, some with a nod towards the source, or suggestions for improvement, but all well dog-eared and ingredient spattered! You are sure to find something here you’ll… Continue reading…

  • Atomic Tour 2024

    Atomic Tour 2024

Our annual visit to our good friends Tom and Mary in Henderson, Nevada, took a somewhat unusual turn this year when it became the “Atomic Tour 2024.” It all started after another fantastic dinner served by Mary when we retired to the Peterson big screen MegaPlex to watch the epic movie Oppenheimer. That was just the beginning. The next evening, we moved on to the PBS documentary The Trials of J. Robert Oppenheimer on American Experience. This deep dive answered all of the questions we had after viewing the movie and gave us deeper insight into the man and the… Continue reading…

  • BMW USA Grand Tour 2022

    BMW USA Grand Tour 2022

The BMW USA Grand Tour 2022 was the brainchild of Austin Lundeby who thought it would be a fitting gift for his dad’s 70th birthday (Surprise!) to invite him to the two day BMW High Performance Driving School in Thermal, CA (southern CA near Palm Springs). And better yet, this plan involved a road trip in Austin’s 2016 BMW 550i driving three days from Denver to Thermal and then three more days returning back to Denver. We hit four national parks, a meteor crater and a wildfire. On top of that plan Austin added a drone for aerial footage, GoPro… Continue reading…

  • Roccamorice 2019

    Roccamorice 2019

Roccamorice lies in the mountains of the Abruzzo region of Italy, 550 meters above sea level (about 1,700 feet). The derivation of the name Roccamorice is unknown. Some say it came from connecting two words:  rocca and moricci.  Immigrants to the US often refer to Roccamorice by its shorter nickname “La Rocca” or just “La Rocc.” Known in the United States as Anthony Petrangelo, the patriarch of the Petrangelo family was born Cesidio Antonio Pietrangelo in 1879 in Roccamorice. He married Maria Dinardo, also of Roccamorice, and supported the family as a subsistence farmer in the local hills. Land owned by the Catholic… Continue reading…

We spent the afternoon with a walk in the park near the Novodevichy Convent. • Tretyakov Museum

    Tretyakov Museum

The State Tretyakov Gallery is considered the foremost depository of Russian fine art in the world. The gallery’s history starts in 1856 when the Muscovite merchant Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov acquired works by Russian artists of his day with the aim of creating a collection, which might later grow into a museum of national art. In 1892, Tretyakov presented his already famous collection of approximately 2,000 works to the Russian nation. The museum was 13th on the list of most-visited art museums in the world in 2020.     Click on any photo below for full screen slideshow. SWIPE or use spacebar to PLAY/PAUSE   Continue reading…

  • ICBM Bunker Museum

    ICBM Bunker Museum

The tour of the ICBM bunker, now turned museum, was beyond belief. As a child of the Cold War I never in my wildest dreams thought I would very have such an experience. Hidden below residential buildings and 13 stories below ground this decommissioned ICBM launch site is less than 2 miles from the Kremlin and connected by tunnel.   The construction technique is the same that was used for the Moscow subway system, and to preserve secrecy workers believed they were adding to the subway system. The whole experience was very unsettling for both Aleksey and me. I was… Continue reading…

  • A Tour of the Kremlin

    A Tour of the Kremlin

Aleksey arranged for an English speaking tour guide and we spent the day with her, in the rain, touring the many buildings of the Kremlin ( a fortress or citadel housing the offices of the Russian government. There are about a dozen in Russia, we were at the main one in Moscow). Before we begin the tour we visit the luxury shopping mall on the east side of Red Square. The GUM shopping arcade has been a hive of Moscow shopping activity since it opened more than a hundred years ago. GUM offers a range of shops and boutiques over… Continue reading…
